Theresa Nicholas Biography

From a career exploring the human mind as a psychologist, I have turned my focus to the canvas. Transitioning to oil painting later in life has given me a specific sense of purpose: to capture the sense of a fleeting moment.

Being colour blind fundamentally directs my process. I am not interested in the "correct" colour; instead, I look for the underlying structure of a landscape, the behavior of light on a surface and the gravity of a silhouette. I use oil paint to capture these elements, seeking the emotional imprint of a place that remains after the details have faded.

My goal is to show the ordinary from an uncommon vantage point, finding the emotional resonance in landscapes and seascapes that we might otherwise take for granted.

My paintings are a distillation. I am seeking the wordless energy of a place, the emotional resonance that remains after the details have faded.

I aim to capture the extraordinary tension of a moment in time, presenting a vantage point that is as raw as it is honest.
